"Cheese" Cake

I finally had the opportunity to decorate a "Cheese" Cake. I had the pleasure to work with a fantastic Bride and Groom (Kate and Ryan) who had the most eclectic wedding style. The theme for there wedding seemed to be Non-Traditional. It was fabulous! They choose to have a "Cheese" Cake in lieu of a traditional wedding cake. The Bride went to an amazing local cheese shop in Vancouver ( Les Amis du Fromage ) and picked out rounds of cheese in varying sizes. Not to mention the cake looked great it cost less then $300. How it works, after they the cake cutting the Cheese Wheels are taken back to the kitchen and made into a cheese platter. This is great alternative to a midnight snack.

WOW! This is the perfect wedding, lots of fun, beautiful without blowing the bank. I love the little details they incorporated, they have done a quilt guest book with old fashion quills. Clusters of vintage camera's for guests to take each others photo's. They continued the theme throughout and didn't miss a detail.

I found this cake table on the Treasured Petal's Blog. I love this because it is a good example of having a simple cake design but by using fresh flowers it looks amazing. Post Card Guest Book

Everytime I am in an Antique shop I cannot help but to look through the old postcard, I love to read what people had to write to there loved ones (keep in mind that there are always blank postcards.) I also have an issue with ordinary guest-books, when Diane and Rory got married they had used vintage postcards as there guestbook. I enjoy this idea especially if you are travel junkies you can usually find postcards from all around the world.

Miss Peppermint Wedding displays how to display the post cards after the wedding.

I like what That Bride thought up, on the back of the custom made postcards they asked the guests questions, ( What should the couple name their first child? Favorite memory of the couple? What did I enjoy most about the evening?)

Cheese Wedding Cakes

There are so many Bride's who are opting not to have a traditional wedding cake. I like this idea, in my opinion not many guests eat the wedding cake and for the most part caterers add a desert course which takes away from the cake service. Remember to discuss this with your caterer if they are not going to be preparing the cake for you then make sure you will have someone to turn that cake into a cheese plate. Perfect for a late night snack! Most cheese shoppes will create this for you but this could also be a DIY project.

In my opinion what makes a wedding unique are the personal details that showcase your life as a couple. Bouquet charms should be used as a token of your life together. Featured below is Celina's bouquet from Handcrafted Seasonal Weddings she made a photo chain with all the relatives who could not be there to celebrate her special day. Celina was having a destination wedding and not everyone was able to make it to her wedding. I love this also for deceased loved ones, they may not be there in body but will be remembered throughout the day. A great way to display this would be by using a vintage locket. I think it would be a great idea to add a cluster of vintage charms that represent your life, you may love traveling or met in a coffee shop you can find small mementoes that signify your life together and after the wedding you can add them to a bracelet or necklace. Sparkiling vodka is a new concept, it opens like a champagne bottle but is 40% alc./vol. so it cannot be consumed like a glass of Champagne but is the perfect substitution for your regular vodka. I like the though of using it in a Vodka and Caviar pairing. As well you could do a vodka and caviar tasting station. The Vodka is imported from Sweden by Camitz.

I found these Bella Umbrella's in a Seattle based wedding magazine and feel in love. They rent and sell these umbrella's (a rental ranges from $10 - $30 and to purchase they start at $49 - $149). They are perfect for Vancouver's weather but unfortunately they do not rent to Canada.

Wedding Signage

For brides who are getting married outside these are lovely handmade signs to direct your guests to the ceremony. I especially like the "happily ever after starts here" I would put that in my home after the wedding was over. I also like the monogram, you could place this in front of or above the head table and again could be placed above your bed after the wedding. They are not too expensive either and she can add your names to the directional signage. These are made by The Back Porch Shoppe.

In the '09 Chanel Couture Show in Paris this year they featured 7000 white paper flowers. So it is safe to say that this will be the new trend. I like that they used all white flowers, I think that is the way to go if you are planning on using them for your event or at home. While watching Gossip Girl the other night I fell in love with the dress Sererna wore. (You know the beautiful grey gown with the feathers in the front.) I spent an hour after the show trying to find out the designer, surprise, surprise. It's Marchesa! It seems every time I turn around a celebrity is wearing a dress that I would die for and it is alway Marchesa. Love these girls!

Leslie at Unless, draws a digital image of the couple from a photograph. This design fee is about $200 (USD) and can be printed at your local printers. This would be a great way to brand your wedding. I think it would be a great idea to get the image printed on a large canvas and hang it in your home. (Sans "Save the Date".)

I have a beef with Brides who make there BM's look awful. You know who you are. I saw a photo recently of a friend of a friends wedding who shall remain nameless. The BM's dresses literally looked like burlap sacks, no lie. They didn't have a waist and the color was a boring beige. I felt for these girls! I guess she was trying to complete the age old conflict of having girls of different shapes and just covered them all up in a sack. I realize this is a conflict that gets looked past by most brides, give the girls different styles! There are not all the same shape. You can see when a BM is not comfortable in her dress. Oh, and don't make them buy a dress they look awful in it. My thought is if I have to pay for a dress I am buying a dress I like. If you are picking the dress you pay for it! I know that seems harsh to all you brides but be fair to your girls. Make them feel as beautiful as they are in your eyes, they have been there for you give them the respect they deserve. There are so many beautiful dresses out there that come in the same color but different sizes. Also, you don't have to by a dress at a bridal shop the prices are crazy expensive you could get a name brand dress for the same price.

When I got married I picked a color, WHITE! They were able to buy any dress they wanted. I remember getting a phone call from one of my BM's saying " I found a dress! It's $15.00. Is that alright?" I loved that call, of course that was alright! I don't think anyone could pick the $15.00 dress out of the photo below.

A Picnic Wedding

If I could do my wedding all over again I would have a picnic wedding. I enjoy casual weddings and this is a way to have a casual wedding but can still be done with an air of elegance. No tables and chairs are needed, but it be a nice touch to add a few bistro tables for those who are unable to sit on the ground. All you need are blankets, pillows and a small centerpiece that can be placed in the center of the blanket. Consider that there will be approximately 6 - 8 people per blanket. So you may need a few more blankets then you normally would need tables. You can have some fun with the menu as well, I would consider doing a box lunch or the obvious picnic baskets. Lemonade stands or drinks made in mason jars, classic desserts like strawberry shortcake and cherry tarts, think classic! Have fun with this theme.

Things to remember:

Be sure to let your guests know so they are prepared to sit on the ground
A picnic wedding cannot be done if you are choosing to have an evening reception, the best time is between 11am - 4pm
